How And Where Would You Go About Reaching Your Audience?

When conducting our research we found out that teenagers and young adults spend on average about 31 hours a week on soical networking sites and the internet, so we thought the best place to advertise our music video and reach our target audience would be on the internet on sites like facebook, twitter, skype and youtube. Our target audience tend to be more socialable people as they spend more time talking to friends online and playing music at the same time. When we interviewed two people from our target audience they said that they spend about 5 hours a night on facebook, skype and youtube, and throughout a day they are on their phones checking all these sites.
Also when we interviewed people from our target audience, we found that they were more socialable people as they spent a lot of their free time on social networking sites, and that they enjoyed a large variety of music even if they didnt listen to the same genre all the time. Some of the questions that I asked my target audience are:
  • where would you go to find your music?
  • Why did you chose the sites you have?
The responses we got were places such as: youtube, spotify on facebook, itunes, 4 music, viva, and capital. They said that they chose places like 4 music, viva and capital because they always played up to date music throughout the day and the people working on the show were the sort of people that teenagers could listen to and understand as they were around the same age as the listeners, and also the conversation topics that they got the audience to call the show and tell them their story's were things that all teenagers were doing all the time, for example partying, school or college, their love life, general day to day life, and what sort of jobs they do. My target audience also said they chose youtube and spotify on facebook because they were able to create their own playlist online of their favourite music without hearing songs that they didnt want to do, and they could watch video after video on youtube without having advert breaks inbetween each video which is what happens on programs like viva, and you can watch any music video that you wanted to from any year or artist. Also they said when they were in the car the music station that they had on all the time was capital, as it again played up to date music all the time and it didnt have loads of ad breaks in between each song, and the people that worked there were again the same age as the listeners or either well known celebrities that came in some days and did an interview.

We would target our audience by using adverts and posters down the side of their facebook/twitter/skype and youtube homepages, and we would make the poster appeal to them by showing the main protagonist in the video. We could also use posters of the music video, and show it differently compared to music video adverts we see on facebook now, so that ours stands out and grabs more peoples attention.

Another place we could advertise our adverts for our music video would be on television on certain channels that our target audience would be more likely to watch. When we conducted our research we found out that teenagers would more likely watch music channels for example viva or 4 music instead of show, as they tend to be more socialable people who enjoying keeping up to date with fashion trends and the latest music out. Young adults also like to watch music channels but also like to watch the soaps on an evening, so the best place to advertise on the tv to target all our target audience would be on music channels, and the ones that are more popular with our audience are 4music and viva.

Pitch And Feedback

Me and Khem pitched our ideas and concept to the class, and after the pitch we recieved feedback from other students and also the teacher. We then took these into consideration and this is our feedback and how we have changed them:

  • what editing should we use?
We have chosen to use slow paced edits where the lyrics are emotional so that the audience can sympathise for the female and her situation. We have decided to use fades and dissolves, when the female is going through all her old memories in the photo album so that it seems like all her memories are fading away
  • do we have a female lead?
we do have a few females in mind that have said they would like to help us, all the people that we have in mind are good actors and reliable so we can count on them to give a good performance
  • what is the narrative of our music video?
The narrative that will be playing throughout the background of the music video is about how the female is leaving the past behind her, and moving on after a bad break up with an ex boyfriend and realising that she was stupid to love him, and now the only way to move on in life is if she does it alone
  • what camera shots and techniques should we use?
The main camera shots that we were going to use are close up's so that you can see the expression on the females face and it matches the lyrics of the video, also using long shots will show the audience the female protagonist and the location where the video is set which helps amplify her isolation now shes alone
  • do we have some ideas on where to shoot our music video?
we have chosen on locationg it in an isolated place, for example a empty field or street late at night when there is no-one around, so that it emphasises her isolation from society.

Target Audience Member Profile

This is Dec on the left and me, and then Becky on the right
I have chosen to interview two people that both matched my target audience, one female and one male so that we got both genders opinions on the pop genre.
I have chosen to interview Dec as he is male, aged 17 and likes pop music, and i have also chose to interview becky as she matched the target audience member as well. I thought it would be a good idea to interview both a male and a female as then i could get opinions from both genders

1. In a pop song, what features do you think are the most common?
     Dec - Girls
Becky - Attractive girls and males
2. What is your favourite pop song and why?
Dec - Bruno Mars - grenade because it expresses how much he loves her but she will break his heart by cheating but after that he will still love her
Becky -  The Wanted - glad you came because the song has a good feel to it and most teenagers could apply to the males situation in the song
3. Why does pop appeal to you and why?
Dec - Pop appeals to me because it allows all teenagers to fit in with the song as different people interpret it different ways
Becky - Pop appeals to me because it allows people to express the way they feel through song
4. Do you think pop songs appeal to teenagers lives today and why?
Dec - I think pop songs appeal to teenagers because it can express how they feel
Becky - Yes, as it can apply to anyone of any age and pop is a large genre so can include a large variety of song
5. What do you think are the expectations of a pop genre song?
Dec - I think the expectations of a pop song is to show enjoyment of life and show your feeling in your own way
Becky - I think the expectations of a pop song is to show how a teenagers life is really like, without having stereotypes of chavs and yobs affecting what a teenager should really be like
6. What is your overall opinion on pop?
Dec - My overall opinion of pop is that it can be enjoyed by everyone and it brings people together
Becky - My overall opinion of pop is that it can be interpreted differently by everyone and that it brings teenagers together
7. What would you say is the target audience for pop songs?
Dec - Teenagers around 13-25 as they are more likely to appeal to the themes of the songs more than what older adults would.
Becky - Younger teenagers to around young adults as more song themes appeal to that sort of age
8. What tv channels are you most likely to watch during the evening?
Dec - I spend evenings on my laptop on skype and facebook so if i have the tv on its on music channels so i can listen to music
Becky - It depends on what days cos i watch the soaps and music channels
9. How would a pop music video attract you to watch it?
Dec - There would have to be pretty girls and a good theme to the song, and also the tune would have to be catchy.
Becky - Have to be hot guys and a good storyline to the song, and something that I could relate to in my life
10. What inspires you to listen to pop music?
Dec - I guess its because every teenager can relate to pop at one point in there life, so thats why i listen to it
Becky - Because its the one type of music that is so popular and has a large listening audience and some teenagers can relate to some songs
11. Where would you go to find your music?
Dec - It depends really, because i go onto youtube and listen to music and then if i like it i will download it off itunes and then onto my phone. But if im not on the computer then i will watch music channels like 4 music and viva or capital fm, because they tend to play up to date music all the time. When im in the car i always have capital on, because it plays up to date music all the time
Becky - Either off youtube or itunes if im on a laptop, or sometimes through spotify on facebook, and when i havent got access to a computer or the internet i go on tv channels like 4 music or capital because they play up to date music all day and dont have ad breaks that get in the way all the time, but if not then i download music off itunes and onto my ipod so i can play music wherever i go.
12. Why do you feel the sites you have said in the previous question are the best place to listen to music?
Dec - I feel that 4 music and viva are a good choice of listening to music because it always plays up to date music and the people that work on the show are the sort of people that teenagers could get on with as they are around the same sort of age as the listeners, also the topics that they talk about are the sort of things that all the audience can apply themselves too, for example party's, romance, love life, work, school/college are all things that teenagers do.
Becky - I feel that youtube is the best choice of listening to music on the internet because you get a wide variety of choice and there are no ad breaks in between music videos, and it is just your music that you want to watch. I also feel that 4 music is a good choice when im watching the tv because its a channel thats more aimed at my sort of age, and it doesnt have as many reality programs that other music channels do, so it is just music you watch.

Overall, after conducting this questionnaire to people in my chosen target audience i felt that the things that they said were helpful and i took into consideration the things they said they wanted to see in a music video of the genre we have chosen. For example question 9 was a main question because without knowing how people are attracted to music video's we wouldnt know how to attract our target audience to ours. I think asking both a male and a female's point of view allowed me to get a wider range of feedback from both genders so we knew what each gender wanted.

Target Audience Considerations

Our initial target audience is young teenagers aged 16-34, both males and females as this song would appeal to both genders. We took into consideration both demographics and psychographics and this is what we decided on as a group:

Demographics:
  • Age - teenagers aged between 16 and 34
  • Gender - both males and females as pop applies to both genders
  • Ethnicity - doesnt matter what ethnicity the audience is
  • Social Class - ABC1, more higher social class people

Psychographics:
  • Interests - In the pop genre, and liked keeping up to date with all the latest fashion and celebrity trends, shopping, spending money, girly days at the spa with their friends.
  • Attitudes - gossipy, fashion conscious, care free
  • Opinions - care about the fashion industry, open minded and speak what they think but care about other people's opinion as well

Target Audience

After doing some research on 'Bauer Media' and other webistes we have decided to lower our target audience from 16-34 to 13-25 as we thought more younger teenagers and young adults would be more likely to listen to songs from the pop genre compared to older adults. After carrying out some interviews with people from our target audience, they thought that young teenagers would listen more to pop as it appeals to them as people, as the song could be about heartbreak and a lot of teenagers have been through that.

Target Audience Research

When researching our target audience,we used 'Bauer Media' to help us see what audience profiles would match our chosen genre.

We found that the music channels we researched were all aiming at the same sort of target audience, and again this fitted with the chosen audience for pop which is the genre we have chosen to do, and this helped us decide what our target audience should be
The common thing among these brands were that they were all well known, and that teenagers use some of these sites daily which again helped us decide what place would be best to advertise our music video. The research on music consumption helped us the best on deciding what place would be best to advertise our music video because it showed us how much each was used, for example the internet was heavily used compared to magazines which was the least used. So it wouldnt be a good idea to place adverts for music videos in a magazine as it wouldnt reach a large media audience and therefore not many people would know about it.
These findings will help shape our product because it has given us a clear understanding of how much and where the media is consumed, and where the best place for us to put adverts would be, and also what brands are well known to the teenage population that we might not have known before.
The sort of thing that our target audience expects is things such as places that have the latest fashion trends and celebrity gossip and up to date music. Kiss listeners have 'a work hard, play hard attitude and they are career focused and want to get the most out of life'. The channel plays music throughout the day which attracts more listeners to the channel.
