font ideas

While we were editing our video we started to get ideas on what sort of font we wanted our font written in, and when researching on the internet on a site called 'Font Image Generator' on different types these are the ones that we found and we thought matched with our genre. As it was romance we didn't want any font's written in horror style so we stuck with ones that were simple but yet effective. We had chosen to put these at the start of video as it is setting the story, even though we are going to leave some titles till the end of the video so it rounds it off.  We also used the snipping tool to cut the images and transfer them onto an image so that we could put them onto blogger.

Some music videos that use titles and the effects of them:

This music video is about the female singer 'Pink' after she had her heartbroken, she says the lyrics  "I think I've finally had enough, I think I maybe think too much, I think this might be it for us (blow me one last kiss), you think I'm just too serious, I think you're full of shit, my head is spinning so (blow me one last kiss)''. This is implying that after she has had her heartbroken, she isn't going to let it happen again. This song fits in with our genre, as it's about romance and love. The titles that are used in this song, go on a clip of her and the male, and this is then edited to make it look old and 'sepia', they do this because they want to show that the memories of the couple are old news now. The titles are placed at the start of the video, and are faded in and out which is a convention of romance, as romantic things tend to be more slow . The typography used in this video, is quite large and bold fonts, and we wouldn't expect this from a romance video, but having them fade in and out adds more realism to the video.

This song is all about the male singer pleading for the female in his life, not to leave him. The lyrics being sung are ''so don't go, don't leave, please stay with me, cause you are the only thing  i need to get by, to get by''. This matches the romance genre because it's showing the male serenading the female begging for her. The titles are at the beginning of the song, and they are placed over the male singing and faded in and out, again this is a convention of a romance genre as it tends to be more dissolves and fades and slow edits in a romance video. The typography used in this video, is large bold fonts that stand out against the singers face, i think this is a good choice for this video because it is suggesting that even though the male can be romantic the titles are bold and quite serious so this could also imply that the male is serious about the relationship as well.
The titles are shown over the males face as he is singing, and they then fade away so that it doesn't take any focus off the male. Also they are shown at the start of the song so that it gives the audience more chance to sympathise with the singer and his situation

This video is about the singer and she is head over heels in love with the male, she describes how she cant live without him, the lyrics sung are ''every time we touch i get this feeling, and every time we kiss i swear i could fly, can't you feel my heart beat fast, i want this to last, i need you by my side. Cause every time we touch i feel the static and every time we kiss i reach for the sky, can't you hear my heart beat so?, i cant let you go, i want you in my life''. The titles again fade away to reveal the female and the male staring into each other's eyes which are both conventions of a romance music video. The typography here is bold and bright white which connote that she is pure and innocent but also that she can be serious and she is obviously serious about her relationship.

This image shows that the titles of the song are bold and white, which makes it stand out from the background, and are shown at the very start of the song, which doesnt take any focus from the singer.

This song is about the male singer, saying that once you have found something beautiful, either in a person or an animal is amazing, and he's also saying don't let anything hold you back from being the person you want to be. The typograhy is quite bold, and also while the singer is singing, the name of the song, goes through lots of different fonts and then ends up in one that is simple and this also implies that maybe everything in life is simple. Also the white of the font suggests that the singer is pure and innocent.
This image shows that the name of the song going through lots of different types of font, and this could also imply that everything that is wonderful is different from everything else and is unique to each one person.

The font used in this image is tall, parallel and thin, which also matches the words of the company on the screen.

The font shown in this image is simple, and this suggests that everything that is wonderful is simple, and this matches with the name of the song and also implies that as well as the song the title has meaning too.

Although there are a lot of music video's now that don't use titles, as the singer already be may well known so the audience would already know who it is. Also i think using titles in a music video could challenge the conventions of the genre of the song, for example songs like 'Birdy - Skinny Love' and 'Demi Lovato - Skyscraper and 'Miley Cyrus - When i look at you', all these music video's are romance songs either about heartbreak or loving someone, none of these videos use titles, and i think that they don't use them because then it doesn't take any focus away from the song and the singer, so that the audience are fully concentrating on the song, and will therefore sympathise with the video more. When we compare the videos that we have looked at, we have decided that as a group we want titles at the start of our music video, and also we want them to be white, as they are going to play over pictures(memories), and this would connote that the memories are all innocent until something happens and destroys them. Also we are going to use fades onto titles so that it looks like as the memories are fading away, so is everything else.

Job roles within our group

Producer - Rachael Halstead
Director - Khem Slawson
Camera operator - Khem Slawson

A producer is someone that oversees and delivers a film project to the film studio. The producer is often actively involved throughout all major phases of the filmmaking process, from inception and development to completion and delivery of a film project. However, an idea or concept for a film can originate with any individual, including a screenwriter, a director or a producer. We thought the best person for the job would be me, because i like to get involved in every part of making the video but i dont like being in charge.

A director is someone who leads, manages, and supervises a project. We thought as a group Khem would be a better choice as director because she is more organised and likes to be a boss and make sure everything is done perfectly, so she would make sure that our music video is to the best of both abilities.

A camera operator is someone that operates the camera, and is responsible for getting the correct shots for the video. Again we chose Khem to be the camera operator because, in our first year of media doing our preliminary task and film opening she was more profficient at operating the camera and is more interested in the technical side of the video.

Background Information on our chosen artist

Why did we chose the song we did?

We chose the song we did, Yasmin - On My Own because when we listened to the lyrics we decided that it fitted our target audience and the theme of the song fitted with certain times during a teenagers life that they always go through and they would be able to relate to the actor and the situation she is in. Also we would be able to cut the length of the song down, from 3:56 to 3:08 because the end part is just instrumental and hasnt got the actor singing and we would have more chance keeping our audience interested if it is shorter. We also chose this song because it wasnt very well known and the singer isnt a very well known artist, so not many people would know the song and also we would be able to put our own twist onto the song, and no-body would think we have copied the same format as the video. Even though we did take some parts of the song, and use them for ideas for example the clothing and make up of the singer as she was portraying quite a natural look, and we changed the locations as we thought a more appropriate place to film would be a beach, park or woods as these match the romance genre.

Student Video Analysis

The video i have decided to analyse is 'My Happy Ending', as we have chosen the same genre music video as well, and thought that it would help more.

The things i like about this video are:
  • The actor felt the emotion of the video, as she was going through a break up and because of this the target audience for the video is able to identify with her.
  • The song has a catchy tune to it, so it would keep me interested in the video and i would want to watch on.
  • The shots are all steady and not shaky, so it looks better.
  • There are a variety of locations used, for example the graveyard, playing the piano, on top of the roof, so the audience doesnt get bored if it was just the same location.

  • The edits all match the pace of the song, so nothing is rushed.
  • The final shot is of a photo, and the edit on this makes it look old, and like the romance of the actors has ended.

  • The fading together shots of the female writing at the very start of the song, look good because it looks like time is passing.
  • The shots of the female on the string, which are held by the male look effective because it implies that the male always has a hold over the female, and this links back to the romance genre.

  • I felt the clothing choices that the actor wore throughout the video fitted the lyrics of the song for example when the lyrics were saying ''so much for my happy ending'' which is saying that after shes had her heart broken so much for everything the male promised her, her clothing was black and dark colours which signifies depressed and down.

  • On the lyrics '' all of our memories so close to me, just fade away. All this time you were pretending, so much for my happy ending'', while this lyrics are being sung, the focus is on the female on the close up shot of her face to show her emotion and expression which matches the lyrics. Also the transitions used are dissolves, which match the first part of the lyrics suggesting the dissolves are like all the memories just fading away.
The things i dislike about this video are:
  • Some of the shots i felt didnt match the lyrics of the song, but were used well.
  • I felt that the same transitions and edits, for example 'dissolves' and 'wipes' were used too much.
  • I felt that on some of the lyrics, the singer wasnt synced to the song and she was slightly behind, but it wasnt too noticeable and still looked good.
Over all i felt that this video was good, and that there were more strengths than there were weaknesses, and that the theme of the song was evident all the way through and everything used in the song including the props, clothing choices, and locations were all conventions of the romance genre, and that everything matched the lyrics of the song. This has helped influence our music video as we chose the same genre, and it helped us chose some of the shots that looked good, we could use them and also we could challenge some of the same conventions and see how it affects the video. We also looked at other music videos from the romance genre, and saw how each of them challenged and met conventions of the romance genre in their own way, and this helped us because we could take ideas from the videos we have watched and challenge, met or use the conventions we have seen.

Rehersals and Auditions

When we were choosing people that would be good candidates for our main actors, the things we took into consideration when deciding who to chose were:
  • would our target audience, both male and female appeal to them?
  • would they give a good performance?
  • were they going to get camera shy?
  • could we rely on them?
Once we decided on the few people that would be a good choice as our main actor, we then decided that it had to be someone that lived local and who we would be able to rely on.
We then decided to chose Alice to be our main character because she would be someone we could rely on, and she loves to dance sing and perform so we knew she would give a good performance.

Editing Process

To edit our film we are using a program called Movie Studio Platinum. To help edit all our clips into the right order we followed the storyboard, and we listened to the music on youtube at the same time, so we made sure that the lyrics matched the movements of the actor.

Ideas while filming

Some ideas that we have had while we have been filming are:

While the female is flicking through the photo album, she gets to a picture of her and an ex which she then rips in half and throws the half with the male onto the floor, which shows that she has forgotten all about the past and is putting it behind her and moving on.

Also we could have had a rose thats old and dying next to the torn photo, so that it could symbolise the fact that her past relationship is old news and that she has moved on.

Also the first shot, is of the female walking down the lane during the daytime, and then after she has finished looking through the photo album it comes to a picture of the female walking down the lane which we will then turn into a video of the female walking down the lane in the evening, and this shows that the video is like a day to day life of the female, and it also ends with the same shot that is started with.
During the scenes at the beach the female is shown sat on the sand by the edge of the sea next to a jacket layed on the floor, and this can show that she would normally of had a male sat next to her, but she hasnt got anyone. It can also show the flashback of old memories and she cant just forget about the past just like that.

Risk Assessment

We did this risk assessment so that when we were filming in the various locations we knew what risks were there and what we could do to make sure that no-one would get hurt, and if there were any risks how we would go about making sure that everyone was safe.
At the party there would be bright lights so we would have to be careful so that no-one had any health issues, and the lights wouldnt harm anyone.
Also when shooting at the beach we have to be careful that we didnt get any sand in the camera, and that we kept it on the tripod at all times.

Before shooting

We chose to dress our female in white clothes so that it portrayed her innocence. She is shown dressed in new, modern clothing because we thought it matched with the fact that she wasnt going to hold onto the past anymore and that shes now gonna make it on her own.

Mise-En-Scene

Locations/Settings:

We chose a park as one of our locations as it showed memories of where the female used to hang around when everything was perfect. It also has significance to couples as they can go for romantic picnics and walks.
We also chose to shoot the female on the swing because it can show her thinking, and when she is swinging its like she is stuck between two places just hanging in the middle and cant decide what to do.

a party scene would be a good time to shoot because it could again show the female at a place that used to be familiar to her, but yet now she feels like she doesnt belong there.
We chose to film at a beach as well because it is a place that a lot of couples go to, and we wanted to show the female feeling insecure by visiting places she used to go to with her ex, but now shes alone its like shes clinging onto the past and doesnt know how to let go.
Another place we chose to shoot was down a deserted lane as that could emphasise the females isolation now that she is on her own and has nobody else to turn to.
We chose to film at the woods as well because the female would stand out like in a place where she feels like she doesnt belong, which would fit with the lyrics of the song.

Overall i think that all the locations that we have chosen to film at all link back to the females isolation, and the situation she is at in the song. The way that she used to have so much but now she has nothing you cant hold onto the past, you have to let go and move on.

Costume:
Throughout the video the female is shown wearing white, as this shows that she is an innocent and pure female, even though the song lyrics might suggest that she has done wrong in the past.
Her first outfit shows that she is wearing a white flowy top with red lettering on it and the white connotes innocence and purity whereas the red connotes love. The blue jeans connotes neutral, and adds something different to the look.
Her second outfit which is a white lace dress with white shoes, portrays all her innocence throughout her whole body.
We chose to have white shoes, as this implies innocence and purity and shows the female is pure throughout her whole body.

Lighting:
We have chose to shoot our film during the day because the shots would look more realistic. Daylight is all quite high key lighting, and it also helps the audience understand the mood of the song. During the party scene the lighting is going to be low key but with some artifical colour lights which will help set the mood of the scene, we will use one light which will help emphasise the female as she will be shown isolated away from everyone else in the party.

Actors:
In our music video we are going to have one main actor, which is a female. We have chosen the female we have to act because she goes to a drama college and likes to sing both in and outside of college. She would be the best person to act in our video because she would act to the best of her ability and would give a good performance. The poses that she would be doing are a mix between closed and open, as when the lyrics say she is scared she will have closed body language, and when the lyrics say that she is happy her body language will be open. There will be a mix of facial expressions but the main one, would be sad because the lyrics are all about someone that used to have everything and now she doesnt have anything and she has to make it alone, so it wouldnt fit the lyrics if she had a postive facial expression. Her gestures would all fit with her facial expressions and link back to the lyrics, as she would show that she is scared but also happy knowing that she isnt going to let anything else get her down. Also the pictures in the photo album will show the female with her old friends and family, and these would show the girl happy but when she is looking back on them she will be sad because she is realising what she used to have but she doesnt have it anymore.

Make up:
We are going to have the female wearing make up because we wanted her to look like other teenagers in society and show that she isnt different to any of them. It could also imply that she is trying to cover her problems with her make-up, that she is becoming a whole new different person, and this is showing that she is trying to move on from the past and make it as someone in the future. The make up that she will be wearing is fake eyelashes, red lipstick, foundation and black eyeliner.
The red lipstick connotes love, and a theme that is present throughout the video is love, as she is trying to forget all the past heartbreak she has had from family and ex-boyfriends. Also teenage girls in society now are wearing red lipstick which shows that she is no different to any other girl.

Props:
The props that we have chosen to use, are all objects that a modern teenage girl would use daily. We have chosen to do this because we want to show the audience that she is no different to any other teenager.
A phone is a modern everyday object that is used all the time, and it shows that teenagers like to keep in contact with other people they might not see all the time. We chose our female to have a phone, because she can look through old pictures on her phone of old memories, and it connotes that she wants to get in contact with old friends and that she is a modern girl.
A photo album might not be an everyday object, but we have chosen to have it in our video, because the lyrics are about something that you used to have but you dont have it anymore and now the actor has to make it on her own, so we thought a good way to show things that she used to have would be through pictures in a photo album.
Within the photo album we were going to focus on one picture, of the female and an ex and when she flicks through the pictures and she gets to this one she then pulls it out and rips it in half. This implies that she is putting the past behind her, and showing that she doesnt want anything to remember all her bad memories.
We were going to show the female stood near a windowsill, and on that was an egg timer. We changed it from a clock because as a group we thought that a clock was really everyday and we wanted something that was different. We chose an egg timer because it shows the passing of time, and you can see the sand moving from the top part of the glass to the bottom which adds a real sense of something that you wont be able to ever have back again.
we chose a bag as a prop, because it is something that every girl has, and its something that makes each person stand out from the rest because everything they have, is different from everybody else.

We chose to have make-up as a prop as well because for some girls it is an essential everyday item that they cant go out the house without wearing. For some girls it makes them feel more confident when they are wearing it, and for modern girls a big part of who they are is from the way the look.
